Broad Beach Ranch

We believe that there are three types of houses. The first are houses that are designed to a certain style or known architectural vocabulary. The second are houses that are approached from a sculptural attitude, where the look is unique to the structure and the architect is the preeminent sculptor in the endeavor. The third is a house whose design is completely dictated by the natural characteristics of the site. Broad Beach Ranch is an example of this third typology. Difficult terrain, extreme environmental limitations and regulatory overreach on steroids literally forced the location of the structure to one small pad on the twentytwo acre site. Fire road access and road design criteria generated the teardrop plan shape. We filled in the spaces, carved the sections and figured out how to build it.
